The next osx killer feature

Posted:
in macOS edited January 2014
network transparency aka X11

think about it...if you've used unix

at all you know X11 best feature is

the ability to run apps from anywhere/any machine

& they simply show up on your desktop

m$ has implemented rdp as its terminal server

product but nothing comes close to what x11

can do & x11 is over 10 years old

implmenting that feature natively in aqua

would be killer...you could network into any other

mac & tranparently run apps on their machine

& have them show on your desktop

what do you guys think ?

Quartz is slow even on its own machine. It would be a lot slower on the network.

I agree. But I think that Madmax 559 meant transparency abstractly, not figuratively. You can sort of do that now; sharing Applications over a network, I mean.

I don't know, Jag runs pretty well on a Dual 1.25 Ghz PM. I'm sure that it runs even better on a Dual 1.42 Ghz PM. It does run a bit slower on non-G4 machines, but it is usable. I have a B&W G3 PM and Jag runs amazing on it that it actually brings a tear to my eye because my comp is running a OS so well despite its age. Plus, I think with the 970 and 10.3 coming out later this year that we will hear no more about comparing the speed of 9.2.2. to X

Remote display is cool, but I don't think it benefits Apple's bottom line. Apple probably doesn't want to sell low-margin thin clients and they definitely don't want an office full of people buying one Mac and a bunch of third-party thin clients.

Hopefully Apple will add fast user switching, though.

The next major feature of Mac OS X will be 3D.

Instead of Jaguar the new OS will be marketed as

    Mac OS X 10.3d

oh... and the glasses will be included, free!, in the box.

Er, not necessarily. If you're pushing pixels (VNC), then yeah. That's the braindead way to do it. If you're sending drawing commands (X11/Display PostScript) then the difference is negligible. X11 is usable over a *9600 modem* in many cases. (Well okay, it was pre-R3.) NeXT's use of DPS was heavenly.

aha but the kicker here is this feature alone

would make people buy more macs beacuse

    aqua is proprietory to apple.

if this feature exists then apple could make

a lightweight notepad type display device

(think star trek :tng etc etc here)

really low power cpu (motorola excels at embedded

    cpu design) wi-fi & a 12" screen

all the device is really doing is displaying

windows as the drawing commands are sent from

    whatever machine you "attach" to

you wouldnt need storage or even a full blown

os for that matter ...just a bare minimum display

subset..short of games you could actually run

anything somewhere & display it .

umm, there is an x11 server available for macosx made by apple. that allows you to run foreign x11 programs on your local monitor. third parties also make x11 servers. is <a href="http://www.apple.com/macosx/x11/"; target="_blank">x11</a> what your talking about?

NO ....think of X11 at the base level...

i.e part of the os so its completely transparent

so display cmds go over the ip stack

& you can use rendevouz to discover machines

to attach to/get display data from

I hope if Apple do do something like this, they do it through a secure tunnel, say SSH, so as to avoid the obvious security issues.
