is it possible to use the disc copy of leopard that comes with a new mac and install it on a different mac?

    If it's the same model Mac, yes. If a different model, then no. (The "restore" DVD that comes with a Mac is just that.) Go spend $29 and buy a new retail copy of SL (unless you're running a G4, then it'll cost you $129 for the old Leo, if they're even still selling it!
