A 64 bit version of VLC is available... you have to dig a bit to find this link:

http://www.videolan.org/mirror-geo.p....2-intel64.dmg

You might want to nuke your existing prefs, using the script included in the download.

Just thought y'all might want to check it out.

    Cheers for the heads-up, 1337.

A word of warning though: If you use Handbrake it won't be able to rip protected DVDs anymore once you use VLC 64-bit since Handbrake uses VLC's libdvdcss and a 32-bit application can't use a 64-bit plugin.

Plus, 64-bit VLC crashes for me every time I try to watch an H.264/MKV movie. These problems are not present with the 32-bit version.

Erunno, if you'd really like to throw caution to the wind, there's a 64 bit pre-release of handbrake available: http://handbrake.fr/snapshot.php

Ermmm... I think I'll reinstall the 32-bit version, for the time being... Hadn't noticed any different behavior of the 64-bit version yet, though.

Thanks for the hint but I'll stay with the 32 bit versions as I don't see how a video player could benefit from a 64 bit anyway. I've read that Handbrake features some encoding improvements in a single digit range when using the 64 bit version but since encoding a DVD takes around 5 hours anyway on my machine the performance improvement doesn't change much in the end.

Playback shouldn't make much difference, playback doesn't consume much compute power. A lot of encoders should benefit from 64 bit though, it depends on the code in question.
