Greatest Instrumental Prelude/Interlude/Ending to a Rock Song

in General Discussion edited January 2014
After listening to Funeral For a Friend (been a while since I'd heard it), I got to thinking how great these classic tunes really are...but that they'd be much less were it not for the instrumentals.

My votes go to:

1. Funeral for a Friend (prelude to Love Lies Bleeding - Elton John)

2. Foreplay (prelude to Long Time - Boston)

3. Won't Get Fooled Again (prelude and ending - The Who)

4. Voice Box thingy on "Do you Feel Like I Do?" (Peter Frampton)

5. Guitar Interlude in "Holiday" (Scorpions)

Brain is locking... I know there are some rock bands that used to do massive instrumental intros to start their concerts back in the 80's (thinking Pink Floyd, among others) but I can't remember what they're called, if anything.

What do you guys think? Any others I'm missing? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

    How about:

    1. Organ intro to the Doors' 'Light My Fire'

    2. College favorite Lynyrd Skynyrd's 'Free Bird' end of song jam.

    3. The Eagles 'Hotel California'

    4. The ending of Chicago's '25 or 6 to 4'

    5. Organ intro of Procul Harums' 'Whiter Shade of Pale'

    6. The intro to KC and the Sunshine Bands' 'Get Down Tonight'

Thats all I can come up with right now....................

I love the intro to 'Sweet Child O' Mine' by Guns N' Roses.

I go into air guitar mode whenever I hear it.

    - Fittier, Happier, the piece that separates the two parts of OK Computer. (you can't go wrong with Fred / SimpleText. )

    - the very end of I Know, the last track on Fiona Apple's "When the Pawn...". I love the way it finishes off the whole album.

This is a great thread, I have wanted to know who did Whiter Shade of Pale for like a year and no one I know had any idea ...

Anyway ... I will submit both the original and shortened [still around 10 minutes] versions of Edge of Darkness, Clapton, with a massive orchestra.

Ending to a song....the frantic squealing guitars of The Velvet Undergound's "Heroin" which segue into a quiet accustic come-down.

The intro to Jeremy by Pearl Jam defines an era of music for me. I think it's classic (at least it is now, since it's 10 years old. man, I'm getting old

how can anybody forget the first 4 of 6 minuts of Bohemian Rhapsody? Yeesh!

And yes, Come on Eileen is awesome... gets ya really psyched up.

An automatically recognized from the start is also Flash from Queen and, yet again from Queen, One Vision. Hmm, Queen has so many songs that start really well.
