help! Why do I receive a spinning ball on IMac with word doc

Please tell me how to stop the spinning rainbow ball on an IMac. If I open Word and then try and open more than one file or sometimes a file it freezes with the ball. You can't log out due to it being hung up. Is there a way to log out or restart without turning off computer? Why is this happening? Brand new computer with office2008. thank you.
