Need Help getting Mobile Broadband for new MBook today!

I have a family emergency but still need to work, so I ordered a MacBook Pro with card slot, arriving today. I need a no-contract service, and to figure out how to shop for a Card or USB modem that works with plans in the family... ATT or Verizon, or perhaps universally with any service (I found Cricket's monthly svc, but the service stop 5 miles short of the hospital).
I'd like to buy a flexible device, with a good antennae, and get a prepaid or month to month plan. I see ATT and V have plans, but I can't find info regarding Mac compatibility or separate purchase.
Any advice would be appreciated! What worked for you?
