ok, im sry but halftime was just lame. first of all, why did they only scroll through about 1/4th of all the names from 9-11?? why not scroll faster so that all the names can at least be covered. it was just halfassed as it was...

second. ok, they tried to make it serious and touching. but i cant really be emotionally touched w/ bono running around like a dipsh*t and a bunch of idiotic fans cheering wildly. touching moment my ass...

oh, and bono seemed to have some trouble on some of the notes of his own songs. anyone else notice that??

oh yeah. whats the deal w/ all the brits promoting patriotic spirit?? and marc anthony in the pregame singing that american patriotic song. is he even american?? go america! (i get paid to say that ) i dunno...it just didnt do it fer me w/ a bunch of non-americans trying to instill pride..............

there were other complaints, but cant remember em now--just got back from the party.

    Irish man, Irish.

I thought U2 was great. I really love U2, and the half time was better done than any time I've seen before. I think shunning U2 just because they are Irish would be a mistake...they were a great choice in my opinion. And while Bono could have skipped the prancing, the rest of the show was very nice.

What was the second song they played anyway? I couldn't recognize it...

i have nothing against U2, but just thought the whole show was put together half-assed. when i was referring to brits, it wasnt just about U2. paul mcCartney was also in the pre-game. btw, ireland is still technically part of great britain, is it not? or maybe not anymore...i dunno...

but thats not my point dude. i was just talking about how all these non-americans are promoting american pride...

not many american performers there today doing that...

    is that irony?

oh the song was "where the streets have no name" i believe

There were parts that could have been better, for instance the names. But it was better than the national anthem.

Yeah, but Mariah Carey still did the national anthem. And it sucked. Why can't they just sing it the way it was meant to be sung? Without screwing up the notes and stuff to make it sound cool?

[quote]btw, ireland is still technically part of great britain, is it not? or maybe not anymore...i dunno...

I'm not sure...but I am sure that a lot of Irish would be offended if they were considered British.

I have no problem with that. It's better to be appreciated by all than by some. It's a sign of togetherness!

[quote]not many american performers there today doing that...

No...I think there are plenty of American performers doing that. But it seems that a lot of popular American performers leave something to be desired.

Thanks...it sounded really great. Nice little guitar blips.

There's nothing worse than when R&B or soul singers sing the national anthem. They ALWAYS mangle it and turn it into a showcase to show off their vocal range or a mastubatory scale exercise.

The absolute WORST I ever saw was that idiot Patti LaBelle sang it a few years ago for some event or another.

Ohmigod, I thought I was going to throw a book at my TV. I had to turn the channel and come back in a few minutes.

I swear to God, I came back less than a minute later (PLENTY of time for her to complete the song), and there she is doing all this "stylizing" (I'm being generous) and dragging out the goddamn ending and completely just being a tacky show-off and looking like an asshole.

Singers like that ALWAYS fück with the melody and the phrasing and it NEVER works. EVER.

Their best bet is to get some country singer to do it, because chances are they're more likely to exhibit the grace and good sense to simply sing it like it was written, then leave.

Mariah is a freak anyway, and when she does that stupid ear-splitting vocal thing of hers, I just get dizzy and want to lay down and close my eyes.

I KNEW she'd sneak it in to the anthem somehow.

pscates, did you ever see a repeat of when Marvin Gaye sang the anthem for 1982 NBA All-Star Game? Truly, a great, but non-traditional version.

Regarding the name scrolling, I don't think the intention was to get through all 4000+ names, If it were, the scrolling would have to be as fast as screen credits for a TV movie--which would've been more distracting. It was more of a memorium.

    Great game, btw.

nothing half assed about it. you just can't see the meaning and symbolism of it and instead think it would only mean something special if every name was listed. When I saw them in NYC they did it similarly only mch nicer because they had their own stage setup and screen and it just fit in better with the set but it was more as a memorial than a brisk fly through name to get everyone listed.

Names were also scrolled across the fans in the stadium so you have no idea how many names were scrolled or if all were. but that doesn't matter. you missed the point.

what do you want him to do? stand stationary? kneel in memoriam?

would you rather n'Sync doing some choregraphed dance or britney spears looking like a slut with snakes on her arms?

    [quote]

oh, and bono seemed to have some trouble on some of the notes of his own songs. anyone else notice that??

possibly because its the first time in a couple years the half time show wasn't lip synced by the lead singer and its hard as hell to hear anything on stage with 100,000 plus fan screaming and music blaring at full blast?

again... it just shows the sorry state of american pop music. what do you want? nSync, the backstreet boys, Jay Z, and Britney Spears up there doing a bunch og bullshit?

Unfortunately people have had to turn to british, irish, and classic rock bands during these times of trouble for comfort and support.

Notice the band that made the biggest impact at the concert for ny was the who.

songs most played on the radio after 9/11. U2's all that you can't leave behind album.

some good points. but i think w/ the name thing, if they hadnt made it so obvious that they werent intending to not show all the names, it woulda been more effective--like if they showed the names in a random order.

and looking back, i suppose comparing to previous efforts in halftime shows, it wasnt that bad. i guess my expectations were a lil too high...

but i coulda gone w/out the prancing around and making the shape of a heart w/ his hands--talk about corny...

and good points w/ the pop culture thing. i guess there arent any better alternatives out there...

at least w/ the popularity and unfluence that U2 has...

and that damn britney spears commercial--i was ready to hurl...

our society is truly living in a sad state........

Heh, I was wondering whether Pepsi thought that Britney Spears would sell anything.

I haven't met somebody in awhile now who thinks Britney is cool and "in". Maybe in 1999, but now the image is "overhyped pop annoyance".

I don't care for R&B/Soul people and their "Yeh yehyehyehyaaaaaa" yodling either, but sometimes groups do some cool harmony for the anthem. Grateful Dead, a capella groups, etc.

While the 6 counties that make up Northern Ireland are unfortunately still controlled by Brittain, the majority of Ireland, the other 36 counties are most definitely not part of Brittain.

The coolest national anthem I ever saw was - believe it or not - Huey Lewis and the News, years ago, singing it a capella.

It sounded like a beautiful streetlamp doo-wop song. They didn't alter the melody or anything, but the vocal chording by the five others while Huey sang the lead really sounded awesome.

I remember sitting there going "wow, those guys can sing!".

It was really good. And no, I haven't heard Marvin Gaye's rendition. I'm sure it's beautiful.

But all the ones I HAVE seen and heard over the years have been awful, so you can't blame me for painting with a bit of a broad brush: two-plus decades of experience and evidence.

pscates, I agree--on the whole, I wince usually when liberties (heh) are taken.

The Huey Lewis was a baseball All-Star game, IIRC--in Atlanta(?).

just wondering...am i the only one who thought it was kind of icky, the way the big tower-like screen came tumbling down at the end...i dont know if that was just supposed to be a cool effect or symbolic, but i was a little... when i saw it. yes, exclamation marks appeared over my head. maybe i took it the wrong way though.

i thought u2's performance was pretty cool, regardless of bono's sometimes strange stage presence. i agree with applenut completely that i'd rather hear some of u2's quirks any day, than listen to a half-assed lip-synched britney spears/nsync bit.

I like U2 but "Where the Streets Have No Name" wasn't the best song for that moment. "Stuck In a Moment" would have been a far better choice followed by an acoustic version of "Staring at the Sun". My brother was at the last show of their U.S. tour and he said they played "One" instead. He said it was a lot more moving. I was distracted too by all the cheering while those names scrolled. That was messed up.

Mariah Carey did a decent job. It's a hard song to sing and she didn't screw around with it too much. Pscates, I suspect Huey lewis did a good job. I would have liked to have heard that but a capella? It's mostly sung that way, isn't it?

I think the problem is that the cameras was not suppose to be panned out when the screen fell. it had to come down at sometime so the people on the other side of the stadium could at least see part of the show

agreed. the most moving musical live performance I have attended was U2 at madison Square Garden after the WTC attack. They started one and then all of a sudden the screen rose from the stage and began projecting the names of the people killed on the flights, and uniformed people and the names of other victims were projected on the audience. I honestly did not see a single person not shed a tear. It was just so sad, and then when the airplane and fdny/nypd/pa and pentagon names were done all the thousands of other victims from the WTC were scrolled on the screen as they went right into Walk On.

Most amazing thing to see and hear so close after the event.

<sigh> someone I don't really think Francis Scott Key thought about how to sing the National Anthem because it was a Poem not a song people..ever wonder why it's hard to sing. It wasn't meant to flow like a song. Please...step out of comfortable shell .....shun conformity for at least a minute and understand that variety is the spice of life. I don't care how singers sing the anthem...justas long as they sing it as best as they can with pride.

yes, it was originally a poem. but the song it was attached to was an old drinking tune. think about that the next time u try to make it eloquent.
