Nested playlists - itunes/ipod

I'm trying to set things up so that when my ipod is done shuffling a playlist, it automatically starts shuffling another playlist. It seems like this could work with nested playlsits. A while back I read that smart playlists could be used to create a nested playlist. Has anyone had any luck with this? I created a new smart playlist and added 5 playlists using the "playlist is (playlist name)" criteria and adding to it, but after the second playlist is added, all the songs disappear and songs cannot be added. Help please?
