Google stands by Apple as a 'valuable partner'

(Mobile World Congress) Amid rumors of dissension between Google and Apple and a potential Microsoft Bing partnership for the iPhone, a Google executive has insisted all is well between the two companies.

According to Reuters, Vic Gundotra, head of mobile engineering for Google, said his company believes they will remain partners with Apple for some time to come. Google's Android mobile platform and forthcoming entrance into the netbook market with Chrome OS have seen the search giant enter into Apple's market, while Apple's purchase of Quattro Wireless has brought the Cupertino, Calif., company into the advertising business.

"Apple is a very close and valuable partner, and we're very excited about the relationship we have with them today," Gundotra said. "We have no reason to believe that's going to change."

The Google official also declined to comment on numerous rumors that Apple and Microsoft are in talks to make Bing the official provider of search and maps on the iPhone. "We think that relationship is stable," Gundotra said of Google's partnership with Apple for the existing search and maps functionality on the iPhone.

The article also makes note of a "Nexus Two" smartphone, which it states is expected to be a new Android-powered handset with a sliding keyboard targeted at business users. On that, too, Gundotra declined to comment.

The Nexus Two is rumored to be a Motorola-made handset forthcoming. The Nexus One, released in January, was built by HTC and was the first Google-branded handset.

Gundotra noted that Google will take the best Android phones from its partners and highlight them. He said no decisions have been made about how many Google-branded phones there will be.

"We decided to take the flagship phones, the best phones that were available, and those would have Google branding," he said.

Of course Google think Apple is a valuable partner... After Eric Schmidt sits on Apple's board for the past few years, we see Google move from strictly search to many of the same markets as Apple

    Safari = Chrome

    iPhone OS = Chrome OS

    iPhone = Nexus one

iTunes Movie store = YouTube movie rentals

    iBookstore = Google Bookstore

Not to mention the Quattro/AdMob debacle after Google outbid Apple..

Coincidence?? I think not... Eric Schmidt is definitely a very good note taker.

I think this is a precursor to them breaking up.

I never believed for a mo' Apple would make Bing the default search for the iPhone. Apple just leaked the rumor so they would have some monetary leverage when negotiating Google's position on the iPhone. The last Google wants is Bing taking over the iPhone, so they give Apple $100M.

Not that Bing is necessarily terrible, it's not.

Microsoft Bing is just another Hotbot. Microsoft is dying and their failure is competing in a Google Market. This is why the search selections on most all browsers are Google, and Yahoo. Microsoft has stretched themselves too thin with their hand in so many different products, each and everyone of them with a better choice as competition.

    Bing vs Google

    Xbox vs PS3

    Windows vs OS X

    etc

    They are losing the battle.

Well, of course they're going to say that publicly, I mean, what else would they say

Google isn't the company that has anything to say though. Apple didn't move into search but Google moved into Apple's turf. Google have no reason to avoid strong partnerships that would benefit them but Apple have reason to avoid partnerships with companies who compete with their core business model.

I don't think it could have been avoided in this situation though. The mobile phone platform will easily rival the desktop/laptop for search if not exceed it in future. Microsoft will push Bing on their Windows Phone platform, which will be available across multiple vendors. Apple couldn't offer this ubiquity with their OS so Google had to do it themselves and chose Android.

It's sad that it's how it has to be but Apple's business model is one of small marketshare and it's not enough to take on Microsoft, which Google need to do. As much as it seems like Google are competing with Apple, i'd rather have them take down Microsoft and still support Apple than lose to Microsoft and have them dominate the mobile industry and search in future.

Snark, unrestrained viciousness, inarticulate rage, and a high level of background toxicity are all the way of the web, which makes it difficult to politely and sincerely criticize anything with the intent of making valid points that might lead to improvement. The climate online is one of sociopathy, with at one extreme the implicit assumption that every individual's opinion is paramount, and at the other, the assumption that one individuals thoughts or insights could possibly matter.

    That said...

With the possible exception of quoting transparent idiocy that shines all by itself, regurgitation of press releases isn't what I need in a tech blog site. There's no added value in repeating corporatese without analysis.

Is there really a browser market? Most people don't pay for browsers, and the only money that can be made directly from a browser is search engine kickback in return for users clicking ads in a search result.

Google was publicly into books long before Apple was, it would be more accurate (but probably still not very accurate) to say Apple moved onto Google's turf there. The same might be said of the movie comparison.

Google and Apple overlap in a lot of areas but there's nothing to stop a symbiotic relationship, in areas where it is of advantage to both of them.

Businesses don't work in a vacuum they can compete and collaborate at the same time in different fields.

Which is what we are seeing now.

I think that Android is the biggest threat to the iPhone.... While I do not think Apple will lose any market share, I think 2010 will be a good year for Android phones...

I have to get a new phone in April and i'll probably get the Nexus One unless something better shows up....

I tried to like the iPhone, but it is just not for me....

Eric Schmidt is a sleazeball, and AppleInsider is the perfect place for me to say this.

You don't think that Google makes money for their Google App Phone or to have their search engine and internet tools placed on a Mac or PC?

I bet they do, or would never earn any capital for their huge company.

That would be Android. Chrome OS is going to be a browser-based desktop OS which makes Mac OS X the closest in terms of the machine type it run on but it's really a new class of desktop OS.

Sure there is. It's still a product and it's still vying for marketshare.

Of course they do, but that isn't the same as making money directly from selling the product.

Yet if you look at both stocks Apple & Google have been trading spot (based on trading day). Apple has more market share as of today but neither company can break the bar set by analysts.

    http://www.google.com/finance?client=ig&q=AAPL

All I see in the real news these days is Google (Buzz & Maps etc. and Microsoft with their Windows 7 Phone software (All non Apple analysts love it).

All I see in AI as well as other Apple rumor sites is a lot of hate among posters and writers of everything non Apple.

    Real World.

Flash is the future for years. Yes, it will be replaced eventually but Flash is 5 yeares ahead of the comptetion (sound familiar) and reasons why the iPad will be a huge sucess.

Update: Biggest mobile operators join forces on app store project.

Update: Biggest mobile operators joi... store project

Apple has almost every mobile service (including AT&T) trying to make a global effort to overtake 10,000 fart apps.

Google and now with a huge surprise Microsoft and of course the ususal suspects RIM and Nokia are not going to let it happen.

If you read an Apple website. Microsoft Phone 7 sucks. If you read any unbiased opinion site it justs escalates the demise of the iPhone & Apple. Microsoft (until today) was supposed be behind Apple in 2 years.

Good luck with the hate. It's what Steve Jobs is all about. Apple's list of Vendor and Supplier content is making sure the 80's will happen all over again.

The iPad is currently a big iTouch (And before I'm corrected, a big Apple ipod Touch constrained to the iTunes store.

they made a mistake by bombing apple

google is an overpriced one horse show that the coming cheap free fragmented localized search will

the gatekeeper is always the first to fail

google is so scared that it is flailing around trying everything to make new business lines
