Thumb typing while holding in portrait?

To anyone that has an ipad: Can you hold it in portrait and reach all the "keys" with your thumbs, or is it too wide? I want something with a big screen I can casually hold and really use for things like chat instead of my laptop, and if I need to put it down on something to type that's a bit laptop-like for me.

    Portrait mode is no problem. I'm an average-size man and I can juuust baaaarely thumb type in landscape mode.
