Admittedly, I'm devoted conspiracy theorist and as such I can see quite a number of explanations for this hiring.
Radio engineering group enforcement. Perpetual lack of resources in R&D is commonplace. And recent iPhone antenna issues (I'd call the severity medium) might just have finally overwhelmed the tolerance pool.
Some guys have been actually fired out as a result of letting antenna issue into the production. I believe it's unimaginable situation that they haven't known. It rather seems being the clear win of IDg.
Some have been fired for a bunch of other reasons. The prototype having been drunk away, for one, which we've already forgotten about.
