Downgrading iPod Touch from iOS 4 to 3.1.3

I have an iPod Touch 2G and I'm sure many of you have heard that these run much more slowly and drain battery very quickly after upgrading to iOS 4. I was hoping to downgrade back to 3.1.3 and remembered reading a post that recommended this website: http://ericfickes.com/2010/07/how-i-...-my-iphone-3g/

In short, the instructions say to restore from the old ipsw file and when iTunes gives you an error after it tries to verify the installation, run blackra1n. Unfortunately, when I try to restore the iPod, iTunes gives me an error ("This device isn't eligible for the requested build") before it even does the restoration, so this method doesn't work.

Does anyone know another way to downgrade?
