If I connect an MBP to HDTV, can I use the HDTV for sound?

For example.



If I hook up my MacBook Pro using the dual monitor slot on my MBP to the PC slot on my HDTV, can I then hook up an optical cable to the back of m TV and use that for sound coming from the MBP?

By the way, I don't mean hooking up an optical cable from my MBP to the television but rather an optical cable from the television to the speakers... which, I hope, would pick up the MBP's sound when I'm clicked into that particular source.
