Illustrator KERN_PROTECTION Crash

Illustrator CS5 is crashing for me.

It's one of those KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE crashes, and it's at 0x0000000000.

It's not my RAM. That's not the problem. This is the ONLY application that does this nonsense. Absolutely everything else works flawlessly. Deleting all of the relevant additional Illustrator files doesn't help.

Any suggestions?

What are the first few lines after the Thread 0 crashed statement? Also does this happen as soon as you open the application, trying to open a file, or when it's in use? Try doing a repair permissions too. Has it just started doing this or did it do this since upgrading from CS4? If it's since upgrading, you can try reinstalling the suite but make sure to remove the Adobe folder in /Library/Application Support.

Yep, when it's first opening. It doesn't even pull up the hideous loading image, it just crashes after a few bounces. It started doing this just a few days ago. It had been working fine previously. My upgrade from CS4 was a clean installation.

It mentions the SVG plugin. You can try moving it out of the illustrator plugins folder. Try moving /Applications/Adobe Illustrator CS5/plug-ins/illustrator formats/SVG File Format.aip onto the desktop or some other folder.

That it does. And lo and behold, we're up and running. I'll just keep that deleted for now. I can't imagine a use for it for my purposes. Thanks for the help!

Why do applications cause a kernel protection failure? Graphics device driver issue?

It's when the application tries to access a sector of RAM that is protected by the OS. In this case, it was the very first location in RAM, which no application should be able to access.
