I think it's fairly possible to keep almost anything as a pet provided you have a proper license. I knew a guy who owned a tank full of pirahnas and a Gila Monster. Personally, I always wanted a Raven Anyhow, yeah, I think you have to take tests, get certified by a state wildlife service or something... I *used* to know like eight years ago.
Somehow, I don't think they're going to give you a license if your only inspiration for getting an anteater is to take care of your ant problem

Have you tried those ant traps that kill the whole colony and not just that one ant? I had a serious ant problem in my apartment in college. I got about 10 of those traps and the ants were completely gone within a couple of days. Of course the second day after I set out those traps, there were hundreds of ants covering each trap. I just ignored them and they were all gone the next day, never to be seen again.

Don't remember, if you go to the store to find them, make sure they are the kind that kills the entire colony. There are several different brands that claim to do this.
If you don'tt mind destroying the house, dynqaqmmte is always good. 2 or 3 or a dozen tons of dynamite will make your ant problems go away. For a little while.
Maybe you could just scare the ants off with a warning sign...

Rick, I'd encourage you to get an Anteater, but I have a few questions first:
1. Do any pet stores in Delaware *have* Anteaters / Aardvarks?
2. Also, do you intend to let the thing do most of its handiword inside, or outside? Having Aardvark feces laying at the foot of your couch or dinner table could be troublesome.
3. What if the beast doesn't envision itself as your pet, but rather, an abducted wild animal struggling to be free? Cuz I'm thinkin' any pet store that has an Aardvark - probably isn't supposed to.
4. What if your pet gives the neighbor's dog or cat the swivelling claws-of-death treatment?
And in case anyone was wondering, one of the definitions of "anteater" is
" 2. Any of several other animals, including the echidna, aardvark, and pangolin, that feed on ants."
