Apple released Monday the Gold Master version of iOS 4.2 to developers, signaling that the update is nearing release.

The Cupertino, Calif., company appears to be keeping its promise to ship iOS 4.2 in November, seeing as the GM pre-release version of iOS 4.2 was seeded on Nov. 1.

iOS 4.2 has been long-awaited, especially for the iPad, which is still running iOS 3.2.2. With the update, the iPad will gain many features that iPhone and iPod touch users already enjoy, including multi-tasking and folders.

One highly anticipated feature from iOS 4.2 is AirPrint, which will bring wireless printing to the iOS platform.

An imminent release of iOS 4.2 should coincide with the release of Mac OS X 10.6.5, since the Mac OS X update will enable AirPrint compatability for Macs. The latest beta of the update was issued on Oct. 25.
