Left side-bar on Finder windows

This is probably easy as pie, but I can't figure it out. I remember that Finder windows used to have a left side-bar that I could use to eject discs and "eject" thumb drives, instantly switch to the Applications folder, etc. This disappeared after one of two events (I don't know which): (1) upgrading to Snow Leopard, and (2) my toddler getting ahold of my computer and banging on the keys and changing about two dozen settings.

I fixed most of the settings from my toddler's random button-pressing, but I can't fix this. Any ideas?

Thanks!

    Finder > Preferences > Sidebar ???

(also: the clear/blue button in the upper RIGHT of a finder window will hide/show the sidebar.)

Everything is checked, yet there's no sidebar at all.

When I click on that, it shows and hides the top bar (which has the back and forward buttons, the search field, etc) and the bottom bar (how many files and how much space they use), but it doesn't make a sidebar appear or disappear.

No problem. It happens to the best of you mere mortals from time to time.
