How do you enable remote desktop to work on a Windows XP SP3 computer with Norton Antivirus 2010 installed. Is it something to do with the fact that the computer has no password?

The Norton AV might be blocking the connection with a firewall. You can experiment with disabling the firewall first to see if the connection works. If so, you need to allow the Remote Desktop to get through in the Norton software. You should also check your router settings and Ip addresses if you are trying to do Remote Desktop outside your internal network.

Try free-for-personal-use Teamviewer. Secure. No set up. It just works!

Simply install (the appropriate) Teamviewer (version) on both machines, start 'm up, and away you go.
