"Ben Curtis, best known as the 20ish "Steven" pitchman in more than a dozen Dell Computer ads, has received an undisclosed punishment from the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) for booking non-union spots during the guild's six-month strike against advertisers two years ago, Variety reports."

Yes, unions have devolved into pretty much useless entities in many cases. But there are many unions that have collectively done very good things for workers . . . child labor laws, workers rights, weekends. it was only about 50 years ago people risked being killed if they went on strike and didn't go to their jobs on the company owned plot where they lived and at the store owned by the company etc... meaning basically they were slaves!!

Here in Pittsburgh, the birthplace of American Unions, you see the history and the extent of labor abuse and you understand why there were unions.

Before Andrew Carnegie decided that being Christian was more important than making money he used to have his man Frick break up strikes with guns ablazing.

and why were they striking? 12-14 hour days, no weekends, very very very dangerous working conditions, ever increasing production quotas and little payment for it all . . . and forget benefits.... whatzat? People died regularly in the mills and were lucky to get a decent burial.

After he realized that a rich man is like a camel, he allowed unions and gave libraries (which were very elaborate with theatres and pools, and bowling alleys, and big shower and changing rooms for the workers coming from the mills) he also gave museums and started Carnegie-Mellon University: which didn't use to be the high falutin place it is now, but was for worker's sons and daughters so that they might aspire to other kinds of work. . . . but he still abused his workers....

Try substituting "unions" with "churches" in your post.
