Can I sue my dad?
Ok, last year he gave me $1600 for my 16th birthday. The check had a note attached that said he wanted the money to be for a laptop or for a car. Anyway, I bought an iBook for cheap with the purpose of selling it for a profit. This was made known to my family before the purchase. So I sold the iBook for $2000 which was a $400 profit. The money came to me in the form of a money order and was made out to me. My dad, being my legal guardian, deposits the money order into his account. He does this because he says it was clear that I didn't want a laptop because I sold it. He said he would keep the money until I wanted to buy another laptop. I bought and sold the laptop so I would have $2000 and my intention was to do this a few more times to get $ for college spending money and another laptop. But he will not let me have the money. So not only does he have the original $1600, he made a $400 profit too. What should I do? Am I just being a prick?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Well, you could realize that your dad gave you the money with strings attached, thus allowing him to yank it back when he didn't do with it what he stipulated.

Ok, using your logic, I should still get my $400 profit though, right? Also, shouldn't I have had to be present for him to deposit money made out to me in his account? But also the note didn't say that the money MUST be used for a laptop it said, and I quote, "I would like for this money to be used...."

if your dad wants to buy you a laptop...why don't you just do it? and if you don't want a laptop, don't be such a jerk about the money.

I'm a "jerk" because this money is ALL I got for my birthday.
Debateable. You purposely decieved teh fatherfigure so you lose moral highground.

If you want to do it right call the cops and ask them.
How did I decieve?

Because you bought the laptop, which is wat he wanted you to use the money for, and the sold it just to get the money back.

I sold it to make a profit, which as I said in my original post, I made clear to him.

If you did not wanted to have a laptop, you will just have to said : dad i don't want this laptop can i save the money for something else ?.
Buying a laptop and then sell it was not fair (don't want to make you moral lessons, but just want to try to explains the feelings of your fathers that think he was betrayed).
The fact that he only suggest and did not give you an order is not an excuse, you perfectly understand what was the conditions. You try to trick him, and i think he wanted to make you a lesson.
I think you'd better make some apologies : i think in that way, all things will become better and perhaps he should give you back the money : but for that you have to understand the lesson.

I usually get a couple of cards and quick phone calls from family and friends back home.
I'd give my left nut to get $1600 for MY birthday.
Although, I have to say, my most recent birthday (January, turned 33) was THE BEST I've ever had...on SO many levels.
And I'll never tell why...the only people who need to know already do.
Back to the topic (whew...got a bit faint there for a second...ahem...), try to get the money back and buy a laptop and stop being cute and trying to pull a Donald Trump.
With $2000, you could get a snazzy combo drive iBook without breaking a sweat. And maybe still have some left over for RAM, a carrying bag and/or an AirPort set-up.
I say again,
Care to clarify this? I fear we're not getting the whole truth.
Goddamit, people seem to be missing the point. Oh well, lock the thread please.

You're an idiot. How are we missing the point? You didn't want the laptop. Your dad said to use it on a laptop, correct? You get the laptop and then sell it to make a profit so you'll have more money, right? Your dad takes back the money because you didn't use it for what he told you it was for. Like I said before, just get the iBook.
How is it that a kid has the network to be able to buy a laptop brand new (on the cheap) and sell it at a 400 dollar profit?

At the time, the 466 iBook was the current model. I bought a used one with a base station and airport card and 192MB of RAM for $1600. I sold it the next day on eBay for $2000. My goal was to do things like this again until I could afford a PowerBook.
What I'm really bitching about is the fact that I don't get to keep my profit. My dad profited from my investment. I am also mad at the bank for letting him cash and deposit my money order without my concent. I don't care if I'm a minor, I should still have to be present or have to have signed the damn thing. THAT is what is pissing me off. I can sorta kinda understand why he took the $1600 back.
Thanks for understanding my point Tiger. I didn't mean for to it sound like I was mad about getting ONLY $1600 but I meant that that was my present for my 16th birthday, now I have no present. He shouldn't get mad at me for trying to trade up, that's weird.
