This stuff is truly fantastic.

    Especially this line:

"They forget about the security cameras downstairs and pick their noses with wild abandon and astonishing force. Still, the only thing that realy freaks me out is the semen. Well, OK, the lubricant freaks me out too, but I'm pretty sure that's because of the implied presence of semen."

It took me there. I wanted to go home, but I was there.

In 1980 my friend's father bought the old Norris Theatre in Norristown, PA.. Before he bought it the theatre was showing porn flicks day and night. He was going to reopen it as a music venue.

First though it had to be repaired and cleaned...

My friend asked if I would help. Well, I needed the money.... God, was it awful. Spooge stains, blood stains, liquid and solid remnents of whatever. We used gloves and masks while we worked. This was pre-aids mind you, it was nasty

    work.

I remember the steel door to the projection booth had a dozen bullet holes in it. All the carpeting had to go...it was too gross. The theatre opened and it ran shows for about a year (saw Iggy Pop there). It really was a nice place...just in the wrong town. It finally was torn down and a McDonalds was built there...that was torn down too. Now it's a parking lot.

[quote]While we do have lesbian porn, we don't really have porn that's aimed at lesbians. I'm not sure how to back up that statement.

    Wow.

That was so good I'm almost inclined to say that it was 45(ish?) minutes of reading well spent. I would, but it was a waste of time. A very interesting and entertaining and in a way inspiring waste of time, but a waste of time nonetheless (I was going to go on a walk but now it's really too dark out).

    Thanks for the link, though.

You mean pre-AIDS awareness right? I seem to remember them tracking the first known case of AIDS back to some airline steward in 1957. AIDS has been around a long time.... sorry I used to do the news updates on the IAVI.com website...canary pox will save us all...aaaahhhhh!!!!!.

ps - I used to be a VideoStore clerk in downtown Savannah, Ga.(anyone who lives there knows where I mean). We had a pretty good porn selection and you definately got to know the regulars habits. Luckily nothing ever got too crazy there, fluids wise . Fun job though everyone should do it once.

Do we know where in Chicago this place is? Does our heroine still work there? It might be fun to stop by and check it out.

That's a sad, MTV throwaway generation's way of looking at the situation. Like you, I found the journal to be very interesting. But we have not wasted our time in heeding to those interests the article touched upon- in fact, we have broadened our perspectives by reading about one porn store clerk's observations and insights. Throwaway knowledge I'm sure it's not.

I was watching that show on Comedy Central the other night called "Insomniac" with that bald guy (Dave Atell, I think?). Anyway, this episode he was in Nashville and he visited one of those porn shops during third shift and had fun with the clerk and filmed some funny things there.

But they talked about a lot of the same stuff going on: types of people coming in, what they buy, what they do, what happens in the back video rooms (and having a mop and bucket at the ready), etc.

As much as I enjoy people-watching and all, I think a place like that might be one of those most interesting places to work for a while. You totally expect a certain element to frequent those places, but what I'd totally find interesting and be fascinated by would be how many upper-middle class women or college girls or "regular girl" types came in. Just looking for a little something different, or indulging in an otherwise hidden part of their life (PTA, minivan-driving divorced soccer mom popping in on the weekend her ex has the kids?)

    I've heard things...

I've been to a couple of those places before and, honestly, I kinda got a bigger kick out of observing everyone else and THEIR attitude/behavior in the place than anything hanging on the walls for rental or sale.

Went with my best friend and a mutual female friend of ours one night, about 2am, when I lived in Nashville. It's called the Purple Onion and we were just acting silly, driving down the road and talking about it (we knew it was coming up a few redlights away). Anyway, we stop and go in, just as a goof.

But it was interesting. The girl we were with was not a wild-ass type, kind of reserved and "book-ish" (but VERY sexy and a funny and a great person) and she TOTALLY had us cracking up.

And I have to admit, the sight of her picking up and inspecting some of the 11" "toys" and making some saucy comments kinda revved my motor a little bit.

I was like "wow...she's got a bit of a hidden vixen in her! Who knew?"

It was fun. We all kinda gave the place a good going-over and still chuckle about it to this day because of some of the stuff (and people) we encountered there.
