Although this does not belong in this forum(Apple), This technology if true will be game changer for Wireless communications, specially in underdeveloped nations.

    As to being useful, it might be if enough cell phones are loaded with the software. The likely hood of that happening when you really need it is very slim.



    The bigger issue is that if you go someplace like the African plains or even our own deserts in the southwest, you should not be relying on cell phones at all. It is simply the wrong tech for the environment.

    Au contraire. The history of consumer technology in recent decades is replete with examples of "inappropriate" technology being repurposed for applications for which it was never intended. What is more, these "inappropriate" technologies sometime drive technologies designed for the application out of the market. From where I sit, all that is required for this technology to work is for the World's wireless carriers and handset manufacturers agree to include it. Within a year, it would be in a majority of phones. Within two years, it would be nearly universal.
