"Exorcist" prequel on the way...

BOO!

Checking out various reports around the web (upcoming movie sites, script rumor sites, etc.), seems that principal filming is wrapping up next month in Rome (other filming was in Morocco) and the film is set for a July 18 release.

For those of you who are fans of the original movie, this prequel tells the story of Father Merrin's (played in the original movie by Max von Sydow) initial encounter with the demon that possessed Regan (in the original movie) while he was a missionary in Africa in the 1940's.

In the original movie (and book), the demon speaks Merrin's name, once during a tape-recorded interview of "gibberish" (which ended up being English in reverse... ) and when Merrin first arrives at the McNeil house to begin the exorcism rites ("Merrrrrrinnnnnn!" as the priest is walking up the stairs to Regan's bedroom). The demon knows him from years earlier, and is waiting for his ass!

Supposed to be quite similar in tone to the original (eerie and moody).

But it's been 30 years and we're all quite jaded and "shock free" at this point, aren't we? I don't think it could ever have the impact that the original film did in 1973. You almost see more horrible imagery and language on "The Osbournes" these days.

Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgard plays Father Merrin (he actually bears quite a resemblance to von Sydow, who is also Swedish) and the rest of the cast are unknown to me.

Paul Schrader is directing and William Peter Blatty, the author of the original novel, is BLASTING this movie, and has - and wants - nothing to do with it, apparently. He claims they're taking his characters and doing things with them that he doesn't approve of.

In any case, any of you here fans of this particular movie? Or am I alone on this one?

I'll see it, but I'm afraid that it might wind up being a CGI-filled suckfest, possessing (hah!) not 1/10 of the suspense, intelligence and atmosphere the original film had.

"Exorcist: The Beginning" seems to be the title (almost as throwaway as "Attack of the Clones", if you ask me).

For those interested, do a Google search for "Exorcist prequel" and you'll find tons of info, some photos from the set and a rough plot synopsis or two.

Be curious to see...

    I've read some <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-form/102-3907878-3160956"; target="_blank">Caleb Carr</a> and he's a much better writer that Blatty. I think there's a good chance that this won't suck.

No, I never saw the sequels because I heard - from way too many sources - that they sucked. That's good enough for me (I've NEVER read or heard anything remotely good about "Exorcist II: The Heretic"...the third sequel was based on another William Peter Blatty novel called "Legion" that had some ties to the original "Exorcist" story. The book was pretty eerie and gave a few good scares and I heard from a few people that the movie was mildly frightening, but not a major hit or anything like the first one).

I think the second one had Richard Burton in it. George C. Scott was in the third one.

Objectively, subjectively...I don't give a crap. Bad is bad. Who's "Mr. Verizon"?
