Surprised this topic hasn't appeared here.

Dozens busted on drug paraphernalia

U.S. cracks down on Net, store sales of pipes, bongs, etc.

ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON, Feb. 24 ? Federal authorities charged 55 people Monday with trafficking in illegal drug paraphernalia from coast to coast, using both traditional stores and the Internet. A federal grand jury in western Pennsylvania handed up indictments against 27 people as part of ?Operation Pipe Dreams,? an investigation stretching from Pittsburgh to Phoenix to Southern California, Attorney General John Ashcroft said.

Goddamnit. Ashcroft can't do d!ck trying to find terrorists so he goes after entrepreneurs...

Web sites may be an issue but the brick and mortor shops are regulated and prohibit the sale of these items to minors.

I work for a company that does not sell these items anymore (we do sell rolling papers, wooden pipes and other "tobacco products"). In 1991, two weeks prior to the Gulf War (coincidence?) he was raided and has never sold bongs or glass pipes again. But we are a little edgy right now. About 10% of our buyers were busted.

Ashcroft:

?Quite simply, the illegal drug paraphernalia industry has invaded the homes of families across the country without their knowledge,? Ashcroft said in a statement. ?This illegal billion-dollar industry will no longer be ignored by law enforcement.?

Invaded? How about ignored by parents who should be watching their children and educating them about drugs. I feel that it is a choice whether you want to get high just as long as it's within legal and healthy limits. Yes, pot is illegal but it isn't as harmful or addictive as alcohol or heavier drugs. Education...education.

If they could only put this much time and money in arresting and bringing in illegal gun runners and sellers of hard core drugs...

Ok, my rant is over. We made $15,000 today...kind of slow but...Mr. Ashcroft? Glass is only one of many ways to enjoy pot. I'm cooking some brownies...so **** you.

    How can these things actually be illegal to possess in "the land of the free"?

    where any arsehole can walk into a pawn shop and plop down cash for the latest gun?

    Ashcroft is a dangerous and fuucked up man . . . its only going to get worse and this part of it is nothing . . . .

    That may be true, but it took an a majority of congressmen/women, a majority of Senators and a willing President to sign the law making it illegal to possess drug paraphenelia. I beleive the law has been around since the first Bush Administration.

    why would you even care what the UN has to say on this issue, fellow? if the issue was regarding how to be in an organization that can't pull it's collective head out of it's ass long enough to make any real contribution to the world, then my interest might be peaked.

    I only linked to show Ashcroft is not alone with his hostility towards drug use.

    That BBC article is crap. Rather, the INBC's attitude is crap.

    A country has a right to define it's own use of laws regarding drugs.

    For example, the legal age to drink in France is 16. In the U.S. it's 21. In many countries it's 18.

    That, of course, doesn't stop most teens in the U.S from drinking while still in high school:

    <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2003/HEALTH/02/25/underage.drinking.ap/index.html"; target="_blank">http://www.cnn.com/2003/HEALTH/02/25/underage.drinking.ap/index.html;

    The U.K. has a right to decide they're tired of wasting their money imprisoning people for smoking a stupid little joint. So what if 3 joints = 20 cigarettes worth of cancer. If 20 cigarettes worth of cancer is legal to self impose, why shouldn't 3 joints be?

    Marijuana is a stupid thing to outlaw. If the government wants to make it illegal to not be sober, then they should make it illegal not to be sober. They shouldn't make it illegal to not be sober, unless you're only using alcohol - which is, of course, responsible for more deaths and violence in this country than any other single drug. Of course, we all know how successfull it was to outlaw alcohol - the rise of gangs and mafia during prohibition making their profits through blind tigers and bootleg alcohol (hmm, sounds familiar).

    Going to jail for having a bong hit while watching half naked women wrestle during a beer commercial on TV - how hypocritical.

    The war on drugs is a waste of our tax dollars. Even the president's daughter got busted for drugs recently if I remember correctly.

    Just because an idiot can find idiots who agree with them, doesn't make them any less of an idiot.

    A tax dollar wasting idiot I might add.

    wait a sec...

    is Ashcroft outlawing all drug paraphernalia?

    including "dual use technologies"?

    despite their apparent slow-wittedness at times, most stoners are incredibly crafty in the McGuyver nature of their smoking hardware

    devices i've seen used as "pipe" (now criminal to possess?)

    <not endorsing use of any such device, just wondering what granny needs to hide>

    * cigarette papers/tubes (your papers please, herr victim)

    * tobacco pipes of all kinds (dual use?)

    * aluminium beverage can punctured in side

    <darwin warning: not healthy to inhale vaporized metal or teflon lining>

    * aluminium foil pipe of chopstick size insulated to hold <foil gets hot, idiot>

    <darwin warning: as above, smoked foil stays in your system like a heavy metal, fool>

    * 2 litre pop bottle with flipped cap(air only, cut as piston with water, snow, ice)

    * cigar partially hollowed out as a blunt

    * bamboo (bong is a thai word after all)

    * wooden flutes (musicians are notorious stoners)

    * carrots (central spine pops out)

    * cucumbers long dugout, but heat cures

    * potatoes see above

    * apples see above

    * cinnamon sticks see above

    * hot knives stove usually required

    * plumbing fixtures (any pipe in a storm for some)

    anyone else seen creative applications of human tool use for morally questionable repurposing?

    can one own a mirror, razor, and straw in the same house under GWB?

    hide your apples and cinnamon martha, it's anti-dancing ashcroft... uh, dave's not here man.
