got a small problem here. my QS 867 dosent like the idea of burning cds anymore. i have the combo drive. itunes wont work. toast reports a media error, ive tried almost every cd in my spindle, and i know they are not all bad because they have worked before and work fine on my friends burner. in fact, the only way i can burn discs is with disc burner in os 9. i tried a clean install of 9.2.1 and still nothing. any suggestions?

    To review:

?The disks (CDRWs?) work OK on another drive.

?The drive works OK in OS 9.

?Errors are reported when you attempt to use the drive in OS X.

That seems to localize it to OS X.

I'd hate to suggest a clean install of OS X but that is one possibility. I'm reaching but this should part of Apple's authoring modules. If someone can suggest a way to reinstall just that part it would save a complete reinstall.

im sorry, i should have been more specific. the only way it will work in os9 is if i use apple's disc burner, toast gives me a medium error on any disk i try, and itunes refuses to burn anything also.

im planning on backing up my stuff and doing a complete restore to see if that makes any difference, and if not, ill have to lug it to the apple store and see what they have to say. I'll have to wait until this weekend to do that because im too tied up with midterms this week

That triggered a neuron flash. I don't use Toast but seems to me there was an extension conflict between Toast and iTunes. Perhaps it was fixed in a later verision of iTunes or Toast or both. Try looking at the Toast support page, the iTunes support page on Apple's site or maybe MacFixit's archives (requires signing up with them). I recall some advice about turning of iTunes to use Toast and disabling a Toast extension to burn from iTunes.

that could be a possibility, but i have never once had a problem burning since i got my g4 and i have been bouncing back and forth between itunes, disc burner, disc copy, and toast with no problems.

since i couldnt back up the 8 gigs of files i had due to my unusable burner, i went and bought another hd from best buy(gota love employee discounts) and tried a clean restore on that. when the drive still failed to burn disks, that was proof enough for them.
