Freezing on restart/shutdown (OS9)

Hi,

I'm running OS 9.0.2 on a G4 256/400 (sawtooth) with Digi ProTools LE and a Verizon DSL connection (which gave me so much grief on installation that I had to re-zero my main drive, and start from scratch).

Everything seems fine now, EXCEPT that my system freezes when 'restart' or 'shut down' are selected from the 'Special' menu.

Any thoughts?

Can I offer any more information?

Thanks!! <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

To learn a little more you might try unplugging the Ethernet cable before shutting down. There may be something related to the connection that won't let go.

Try booting from your install CD. Can you shut down correctly now? If there is still a problem try removing the Ethernet cable. If there is still a problem I'd be suspicious of a hardware problem. Try scanning the disk with Disk First Aid or your favorite utility.

If you can shut down when booted from the CD but not the HD I would reinstall OS 9 (not a clean install).

    Good luck.

Many times this can be caused by a corrupt ApplesharePDS file. That file is invisible, and on the root directory of your boot hard drive. First turn off File Sharing if it's on, then with FileBuddy (download at versiontracker.com) search for invisible files and delete ApplesharePDS. It will be recreated if you restart File Sharing.

Upgrade to OS 9.2. This is the most solid Mac OS. That should solve most of your problems.
