macbook 2008 battery reset proceedure

Hi All, macbook battery died when i left the computer on sleep mode for 10 days. The genius team at the Regent street London store, mentioned that there are a couple of reset procedures that may bring it back to life, but i didn't have a spare half hour to queue. It was working fine before i left for my hols. Any knowledge that someone can share please?

great - i will try the SMC reset first. Thanks for the suggestions. I've just joined so also thanks for the post guidance.
