Networking OS X and PCs Question

I've poked around the forums and looked at DAVE but I want to make sure I understand this. I am running 10.1.4 and this summer I will need to connect my Mac to a PC to share files. Can I use a crossover cable and then click on Connect to Server to find the PC? Or do I have to have DAVE to share files?



And if I just need the cable, is it really easy to set the network up? I am used to AppleTalk networks but have never really set up a TCP/IP network.
