Ho hum.... nothing new. A larger drive iPod is a no-brainer. The original will drop in price until it is sold out. They will not be making any more of the 5 Gig versions.

why would they not offer the 5GB as a low end option? killing it makes no sense. it would still sell if at 299.

When Apple makes a minor upgrade on products they usually faze out the original model. I think this will happen with the iPod. The price may be the same on the new one or possibly $50 less. We'll know after Tokyo if it is gonna happen. By the way, still no indication that SJ keynote will be webcast. This probably means no really new announcements... so please all who read this forum, don't be disappointed!

yea but that's only when they can't really go lower on the first rev. when the iPod came out there was no other option available besides 5GB. now there is 5, 10 and 20. Apple has expanded product lines in the past for similar reasons. look at the iMac and iBook lines.

Maybe true of computers, but this is a bit of a different beast - the 5gig iPod still has tremendous functionality. A whole lot of potential buyers out there may not own close to that many gigs of mp3s and as such wouldn't buy it at 399, but at a reduced price, the current model has TONS of extra life in it. If the newer one doesn't have a tremendously updated feature set I'd be very very surprised if they fazed out the current model just because of a smaller HD.

    Exactly!

And we all know how much apple likes

    Good

    Better

    Best

So I definetly think we'll be having a couple levels of iPod. It just makes sense.

Oh please do not start the "no webcast = no new hardware" debate.

That is just not true, as we've seen at MWTs in the past when SJ would roll out new stuff, and there would be nwo webcast.

Subject: More Powerful G4s are to come.

Here at Apple we have been very busy trying to get more out of the G4. Motorola last week sent us the shipping version of the 1.6GHz G4. This in July will be in a dual configuration with a single 1 Ghz in the low end $1299 slot. The mid level will most likely be a 1.2 or 1.4 or maybe both. I will send you more when i get it.

"Here at Apple" , "the 'shipping version' of the 1.6GHz G4" ?? OMG are people gullible.

How easy would it be for Apple to get a warrant and seize this asshole's computer to find out who breached a major NDA? Dirt Simple. If there were any truth to it, the site wouldn't even be online right now.

I also love how the new iPod is going to be "twice as big, but no specs yet". That makes so much sense. Let's take the "1000 songs in your pocket", and then make the next version twice as clunky! Maybe the next batch of Nokia cell phones will be twice as big too - I hear 80's is back in style!

    **CONFIRMED** YDM = MOSR-quality fabrication

YMMV of course, depending on how desperately you want to believe something / how bored you are.

I'd definitely pick up a 5Gb version if it was somewhere between $199 and $249

Um Moogs... I think you've been staring at your monitor too long...

"I work at a manufacturing company in Taiwan and I have been overseeing production of the new iMac and the G4 and while production for both of these machines have picked up I have seen some other prototypes come in the door for a 100 to 200 machine run. I love this new device that Apple is working on. It is about double the size of the iPod but I dont really know the technical specs since I oversee the production line. But I do know that this thing can take pictures and also has a 5gb hard drive in it. If your readers are really interested in it I am sure I can maybe grab one and answer any questions they might have? "

Where exactly does it say the new iPod will be twice as big? I read the new digital device would be twice as big, with a camera...

Hey, maybe the page changed between your read of it and mine..

Maybe you're right, but I'm not going to waste my time guessing what this "source" really meant to say. All I need to know about YDM is some of those other "quotes" on their index page. It's so incredibly bogus as to be humorous....

Neutrino -- I see you are in Yokohama too. Are you going to Macworld?

hey tokyo peoples....isnT it great how MacWorld Tokyo starts on a national holiday? For once I donT have to come up with a mysterious illness to skip work

Im not going....I donT want to waste my time if the only "new-thing" ends up to be lime-colored iPods [remember the lime iBooks that came out that one year in Tokyo...jeez]

Hey, don't you be dissin' the key-lime ibooks now! Ok, so when I saw that they had released them I must admit I thought someone at Apple had been smoking something funny, but they are actually pretty cool if you see one in person. Maybe the most distinctive laptop ever.

As for me, I am going to Macworld Tokyo just because when I was in the US I was always in the midwest and thus was never close enough to justify going to either of the US Macworlds. I'm not expecting anything huge, but you never know.
