Get OS X to use unsupported PS printer?

Is there a way to get OS X (10.1.5) to use an "unsupported" PostScript printer?

I have a Kyocera FS-800 printer (parallel port), connected to an iBook's USB port with a USB to IEE-1284 lead.

I've installed the Kyocera driver file from their website. It just seems to add fonts (matching the printer's built-in fonts) and PPDs - and it doesn't include the FS-800 model. So I've added a copy of the FS-800 PPD to the same location as the other PPDs it installed.

When I go to Print Center > Add printer > USB, the printer shows up as "FS-800 (Unsupported).

So... it looks like OS X is 'seeing' the printer attached to the other end of the lead, there's PostScript printing capability both in OS X and in the printer, and the PPD is in place in the PPDs folder... but I just can't bring everything together. Can anybody help?

I rang Apple support yesterday, and they suggested adding the printer as an LPD on localhost, but that didn't work. (For that to work, I'd have though you'd have to tell something somewhere to print using the USB port, no?)

It feels like it's so near yet so far! Any help appreciated.
