replacing ata 66 hd with ata 100 hd?

    Not a problem, since ATA-100 (and ATA 133 for that matter) is backwards compatible with ATA-66!

    It should work, albeit at ATA 66 speeds. It seems difficult finding ATA 66 drives in PC catalogues. Perhaps this is an indication Apple needs to update its motherboards and include faster drives as standard.
