5400 and 5260

Ok, I recently picked up a bunch of old apple stuff. two computers were the 5260/100 and the 5400/200. The 5260 works perfectly. The 5400's monitor is busted. So I have to questions:

1. Is it possible to turn the internal 5400 monitor off? I have a graphics card and a monitor to use it with (and timbuktu after I get the ethernet working) so that's not a problem. Is there a setting in the OS or is there a way to open it up and (hopefully) easily disconnect the power.

2. If it's too hard to disable the monitor, is it possible to take the motherboard from the 5400 and put it in the 5260? They have the same form factor but could be different in other respects.

Thanks, any comments are appreciated

Well, that says that they are both 220 watt machines and that they both have ATA HDs and SCSI CDs...so that makes it a little bit closer to exact same thing. But I'm still worried about trying to put a perfectly fine MB into a computer that could ruin it.

I would first try to put a PCI Graphic Card into the performa, and look if that would run.

If it doesn't, you could still buy an old performa 5400 with a defect motherboard, and build yourself a new one with the monitor. (together with yours)

and if that still doesn't work(or you don't wanna buy another performa(check your local school if they have old performas)), you could replace the mobo from the 5260 with the one from the 5400...

Well, I will definitely try the PCI/w external Monitor route, but I don't think the computer will start up. Without the external monitor, It sounds like it tries to change the monitor resolution and than the monitor goes into a frenzy. It doesn't display anything but it makes horrible noises. And it sounds like the resolution changes every few seconds. May be an external monitor will help that, but I'm scared that the monitor will:

    A) Blow up

    B) Go on Fire

    C) Start sparking

    D) Do some messed up stuff that shouldn't be happening... <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

Ok, I just tried to turn it on with external Monitor...the external monitor goes on and displays the gray and white background but the happy mac didn't come up. I left it go for about 1 minute. The internal display never displayed anything and must have changed resolutions 6-10 times. And the annoying sound start to sound like sparks so I unplugged the computer...any advice?

the performa doesn't know that his main display is shit, so your second monitor would be what it is, a second monitor. saying that means that he displays the happy mac on the first display, which is broken.

that means you should let him boot, and then move blindly through the system folder to the control panels, and there to the monitor panel. when you activate that he should bring the control panel up on your first monitor, and then you would have to try blindly if you could move that over to the second monitor.

happy trying, and I hope you will survive the performa....

Thanks for your help. First off, it's a PowerMac . Second, I'm really scared to leave the powermac on too long because the monitor makes a sparking noise and I'm scared it will go on fire. I'll keep trying though

I spent ages with solder, capacitors, regulators and what not to get a 5400 board (PCI) working in a 6300 (not PCI) chassis. The issue is that the 5200 to 6300 machines' PSUs typically don't give the 3.3V to the moth-board that the 5400 to 6400 require. You 5260's PSU does, you lucky person
