FTP on a beige G3

My friend wants to set up an FTP site under OS X on a beige G3. The FTP part is easy enough, but due to the limitations of the beige G3 (OS X must be on a partition 8GB or smaller), he will need to store most of his files he wants to offer on an external drive. How can he give access to these files through his FTP site?
