Just like the iPhone 3GS stayed with an upgrade to an A4 chip, keeping the same case and discontinuing the iPhone 4.

and Apple will introduce the iPad [insert new name here] - a **smaller** version of the iPad with the retina display and an improved camera.

Forcing everyone to rewrite every single application and iBook, despite it having the same screen resolution.

They will be showing it running the new OS.

    What, iOS 6? No.

It will be priced starting at $399.00. Count on it.

The iPad 2 will be priced starting at $399. No modification.

Huh? Different products, dude. Keep up.

Yeah...Apple has no precedent here, do they? They never "encourage" developers to clear out the cobwebs and deal with OS improvements, do they? Never happens.

HUH? Of course it's iOS 6...the "new" version with (in Tim Cook drawl) "over a HUNNERD *new* features!"

Yeah, let's take a still hot product with a PROVEN price point and lower that price even though there's not a single reason to do so.

    I guess we'll see...

I'm invalidating your statement by comparing it with an equally silly rumor that we heard before the iPhone 4S came out.

So you don't imagine there will be huge backlash when developers find out their last two months of work is now virtually worthless?

Which we won't see until the next iPhone in October, is the point. The iPad 3'll be running iOS 5.1.

Yes, let's take a brand new product and make it cost more than last year's product, flying in the face of nearly every release Apple has had since Steve's return.

Unless you're implying there'll BE no new iPad 3.

Of course there will...there always is.

    "What iPad3?" is the point.

Huh? Didn't say that...let's try again:

iPad2 stays in the lineup at current price. Upgraded processor and camera.

NEW, SMALLER iPad introduced at lower price. It's smaller so Joe Consumer needs it to be cheaper too. Starting at $399.

I'm not implying it...I said it. Unless they decide those two upgrades necessitate the "3" moniker.

So NOT the iPad 2, then. That'd be a new name.

So what's with the leaked cases and frames for 9.7" iPads and not even the slightest glimmer for anything smaller? Not even hints of "large production orders for 7" LCD panels" like we saw for 9.7" panels before the first iPad came out?

Joe Consumer seems to find the $499 iPad well within his budget.
