HELP, my new dual 1GHz barely runs

I decided last week to save the $600 dollars on the developer deal by switching out my dual 1.25GHz G4 for the dual 1GHz, and so I have just today received my new tower. The only thing is I am running into multiple frustrations.

First off, I bought a Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse which is Mac compatible and which I've been using on my other PC for the last two weeks. I plugged it into the tower and it works like normal except it started crashing the computer after a few minutes. I can move the mouse, but I can't click, and the keyboard didn't respond. Logitech has a download which goes into the system preferences and so I can change the buttons and what they do; fine and dandy except it still hangs constantly. I had to restart the computer a total of 5 times in 1 hour because programs like iTunes would lock everything up when I was trying to move files around. It wasn't just iTunes though, and I don't understand why it does this when it's clearly Mac compatible and when I've already downloaded the correct program to run it smoothly. Could it be Jaguar? I've used Mac's a bit over the past months but never owned one, so what do I do?

My second problem is that I also bought a USB 2.0 PCI card from Addonics which is Mac and PC compatible. Again I had this card in my PC for a week or so before I got this dual gig and it worked flawlessly. After I installed it into my tower it transferred my 7.3 gigs of music like non other but then the mouse caused my computer to hang again and ever since restarting it-it only transfers files at 1 MB a second (USB 1.1 I suppose). Addonics doesn't have any drivers for the card for Mac as far as I can tell so I'm kind of screwed, especially not having any complete real world experience with OSX. Where do I go to find out if its working or not? I know about the system profiler but it doesn't tell me much, is there something like device manager in Windows that would let me see the drivers and know if the device is loading ok or needs an update or something?

Any help you guys can give me is going to be very helpful to me.

Thanks-

    What OS X version?

What OS CDs came in the box?

How much RAM, and did you add any yourself?

Is the Logitech plugged into the USB card or the built-in USB?

Awaiting the above info, the first suspect is definitely the USB card.

Most USB 2.0 devices seem to also have Firewire ports - I'd stick to FireWire as much as possible.

    OSX Version- 10.2 (6C125)

OSX 10.2 Backup OS CD's in the box

Ram- One 512MB DIMM (Apple Installed)

Plugged into built in USB port. USB 2.0 Card is 4 port with 1 internal port on slot 2 of my motherboard.

If you haven't done it already, go under Apple menu to About This Mac and click More Info to get the Apple System Profiler (a little like Device Manager). See what it has to say about the card on the PCI bus.

I'd go in this order to isolate the problem, process of elimination, try the computer heavily after each step:

    Re-seat RAM chip.

    Remove USB card.

Swap Logitech KB for Apple's, and remove its SW if possible - sherlock for Logitech, should be an uninstall option if they used a good installer.

(A further note about Logitech software: Personally, I have always preferred USB Overdrive for my Logitech optical mouse & cordless optical trackball. You would probably lose the neat one-buttons on the keyboard if this is the culprit, though.)

Move RAM chip to different slot.

Swap RAM chip out for another PC133 DDR if you can borrrow one from somewhere.

Reinstall 10.2 from the enclosed discs, and when you see the Options button, choose Archive & Install with Preserve Accounts.

Reinstall 10.2 from the enclosed discs, and when you see the Options button, do NOT choose Archive & Install with Preserve Accounts.

Back up anything that's not already backed up. Reinstall 10.2 from the enclosed discs, and choose the Initialize Disk option.

Sorry to hear your new toy is so ill. It happens in the Mac world too (just a lot less than in the PC world in my extensive experience).

Oh yeah, final solution is, before 10.2 installation, go under Installer menu, choose Disk Utility, and initialize and zero out (write zeros to) the HD. It will take hours, but is the only final cure for some problems.
