Late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs was given the President's Award by the Cupertino Chamber of Commerce last weekend in recognition of outstanding community service and exceptional leadership.

Michael Foulkes, Apple's senior manager for state and local government affairs, accepted the award for Jobs on Saturday, the Palo Alto Patch reported. Jobs passed away last October at the age of 56.

The Cupertino Chamber of Commerce hands out its Service Teamwork Achievement Recognition (STAR) awards annually. Saturday's ceremony, the city's 55th, was held at the Cypress Hotel.

In his acceptance speech, Foulkes said Jobs "hated awards, especially awards about him" and teared up because of a tribute video featuring photos of Jobs and video of his last appearance before the Cupertino City Council.

“We all miss him so much here, but, um, he believed that technology was a mental bicycle and that's all it was; nothing more, nothing less. It should make each of us be better than we are. He always followed that and the company still follows that, and hopefully will follow it for generations to come," he said in his acceptance speech.

“So Steve lives in all of us. Those who worked with him miss him dearly but he lives in our hearts. All of you who have a device at home or in your pockets, hopefully that is your mental bicycle and make you be a better person than you are."

Foulkes also made mention of the project to build a new campus for Apple in Cupertino that Jobs had designed.

"Steve designed this campus as a product. You'll be very excited as it comes to fruition. It's something that is an engineering marvel that will rival any building on the planet and something that Steve, up till the end made sure was going to be a lasting legacy for Cupertino of Apple. So thank you in Steve's honor for this award,” he said.

The Palo Alto Patch has posted recordings of the tribute video and Foulkes' acceptance speech, both of which are embedded below.

I believe Steve expressed it as "a bicycle for the mind."

Anyway, this is well deserved recognition, but what do you have to do to get STAR recognition in Cupertino? I guess nothing short of putting the city on the map, creating thousands of direct jobs and pouring millions of dollars back into the local economy for over 35 years. Only then do they hand you an award for community service.

I know, right? He was like the greatest CEO of modern times. Any objective Chamber of Commerce would have given him like 10 of these by now. Since this is the first one, and they waited until he died, we must conclude these people are non-objective in their judgments, and an award from them not worth having.

A similar thought occurred to me.

Additionally, it sometimes seems that awards like this are more a form of advertising for the award giver than an honor for the award receiver. Perhaps I should announce the first annual award of the Blastdoor Medal For Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Excellence. The ceremony will be held at my new restaurant, opening this weekend! Come for the ceremony, stay for the spicy wings!

They should name it the Steve Jobs Community Service Award! Though it won't spell STAR.

The new campus I believe will also be a huge boon for the city in that thousands of people will come just to see the building. I hope they have a really nice gift shop and some type of tour/museum.
