Apple to open off-campus employee-only cafeteria
Apple received the green light on Tuesday to build a two-story, 21,468-square-foot cafeteria to be used exclusively by employees who work outside of the company's main Cupertino campus.
The Cupertino Planning Commission issued a unanimous final approval for the project which will break ground on the corner of Bandley and Alves in Cupertino, an area where Apple operates a number of satellite offices, reports San Jose's Mercury News.
Meant for Apple workers only, the cafeteria-style eatery will feature a cafe, meeting and lounge rooms as well as a courtyard. The second floor of the building will be dedicated to cafeteria workers and will hold storage, mechanical and conference rooms.
"We like to provide a level of security so that people and employees can feel comfortable talking about their business, their research and whatever project they're engineering without fear of competition sort of overhearing their conversations," said Apple Director of Real Estate Facilities Dan Whisenhunt. "That is a real issue today in Cupertino because we've got other companies here in our same business."
Employees are largely expected to get to the cafeteria by biking, walking or taking a company shuttle that will make 228 passenger trips per hour. Another option is the facility's 27,000-square-foot underground garage that will accommodate 70 cars.

The new cafeteria will join five existing cafes and about a dozen smaller eateries run by Apple. Whisenhunt said that the company is also looking to add another cafeteria at its Results Way campus off of Bubb Road.
"Just like everything Apple does, it has a flavor of very high quality to it and from an architectural standpoint, it's a good addition to the city," said Cupertino Planning Commission Chairman Marty Miller said of the project.

The most important reason for this building is to give their employees a place to lose their prototype phones in a place where Apple can recover them.
