Webmasters - I am looking for a good FTP daemon + monitor daemon

I currently have a server running on OS X Server 10.1 (10 clients) and for various reasons would like to upgrade the OS. Due to the pitiful nature of 10.1 server I ended up configuring most of it by hand anyway, so I figure when I upgrade I might as well go with vanilla OS X and save the money (the server only handles web/email/dns so this is relatively simple).
I was figuring on using proftpd for my FTP server - anyone have any info about that (good/bad/ugly), or recommendations for other ftp servers (free is what I am really looking for).
Also, the big piece I need is a watchdog daemon to monitor my processes and reboot anything which dies. I did a quick search on versiontracker but didn't spot anything - does anyone know of a good freeware app which does this?
