how is icloud accessed from ios (phone, ipad etc)

if you save text edit to icloud,  how do you access from phone and pad?  numbers documents have to be manually uploaded to icloud?  i thought everything saved in icloud automatically so you can access from every device?  notes automatically updates accross devices.  i am still using dropbox and evernote.  trying to understand how devices are getting integrated.  is there way to access icloud storage site, not icloud page with find my mac etc ?
