With Apple expected to unveil its new iPhone on Wednesday, AppleInsider took a closer look at trade in services that offer cash or gift cards in exchange for your old iPhone.

The comparison offers an idea of how much money customers can get for trading in their used iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S with some of the most popular services available.

We took a look at Amazon, which offers gift cards in exchange for trade-ins, as well as services that offer cash for a used handset: eBay Instant Sale, Gazelle, NextWorth and uSell.

As a baseline comparison across all services, we researched how much is offered in exchange for a 32-gigabyte black iPhone on AT&T's network.

The iPhones trade-in values obtained are for a device listed in "good" or comparable condition, which generally means light scratches and normal wear-and-tear, but no major cracks or blemishes. Actual trade-in values will vary for devices in better or worse shape.

If you're OK with receiving a gift card, Amazon.com is probably your best bet. The online retailer offers the highest trade-in value for the 32-gigabyte black AT&T iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, and iPhone 3GS.

However, it should be noted that the Amazon gift card cannot be used at Amazon Wireless, which is the site that sells smartphones. The gift card can be used on other products purchased from Amazon.com's main site.

If you prefer cash for your iPhone, eBay's Instant Sale service offers the best value for the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4. However, uSell, a website that lets you choose a buyer for your device, currently offers the greatest trade-in value for a 32-gigabyte iPhone 4S.
