I'm not exactly sure what Standby is, but a PC-using friend of mine (who actually knows something about them!) told me what Hibernate is. Basically, the computer puts the contents of the RAM into a section of the hard drive, and then powers off the computer. When you turn it back on, it's back to how it was when you last used it. The advantage to this, especially with portables, is that you can easily switch batteries without losing anything. The problem, however, is that it takes longer to wake from hibernation than it does to wake from sleep.

I personally prefer the instant-on wake from sleep in OS X... of course, my laptop only has one battery so I never really think of changing it in the field.

"Stand-By" is the PC equilvalent of "Sleep" in MacOS.

Just as with a Mac, a PC will go into "Stand-By" mode when it's left standing still for a period of time. You also have the option to put a PC into to "Stand-By" mode at the shutdown window. The big difference between the two (which goes back to MacOS 9) is that a Mac "wakes" much faster than a PC. In OS 9, my Mac would "wake" within 10 seconds. In OS-X it takes my Mac just about 1 second to "wake".

I use a PC at work (Dell Precision 340: 1.8GhZ P4/512MB RAM/Win2000 Pro/Blah, blah, blah). I hate it for many reasons other than the fact it isn't a Mac, lol...It takes almost a full minute for the PC to "wake" from "Stand-By" mode. The OS is just as quirky as MacOS classic with freezes and all. To top it all off - for a state-of-the-art Pentium 4 processor running at 1.8 Gigs: it is slower than anything I have ever seen in the world of Apple. This computer was brand-new about 4 or 5 months ago and I swear that my 3 year old iMac G3/350 out performs this son-of-a-bitch, god forsaken, piece of shit PC. If that's not a testament to the power of Macintosh, I don't know what it is, LOL...

thanks for the vaulable info guys.

the reason i was asking this is b/c when i put my pc in stand-by mode, which i expected it to be like mac's sleep mode, all the fans are still on (tower, not portable). Is this unique to my home brew computer?, or pre-fabricated pc's will actually power off the fans and everything (besides the ram of course)

thanks for taking the time to answer stupid windoze questions in a mac forum, i must apologize for posting peecee stuff in a mac forum.
