TiBook Superdrive "beeping"

Just over the last day or so, my SD has been "beeping" randomly, every 10 minutes or so...it isn't too loud, just loud enough to be annoying and worrisome. Sometimes it is almost a "humming" type sound, or lots of beeps strewn together. This is definitly coming from the disc drive, and it is NOT the fan (I know what that sounds like! ) I ran the Apple hardware test CD and no problems were found (and no problems running the disk either). It doesn't seem that this is effecting performance, but I would like to stop it if possible though.

odd, not sure that there are enough people who own this model yet to be likely to help out. you probably want to call Apple Tech support on this one, and post your findings back here if you can. i'd be interested to know what this is.

I think somebody has mentioned this problem here before. It might have been 'Paul'. I'll tell you what I told whoever it was: the application called Thoth does make a sound that is freakishly close to what one would call a mechanical grounding sound with beep. If you are using this application (especially if you download binaries with it), it is very likely this. If not, I hope the other man with this problem will come in this thread and tell of his solutions. It appears to have been a harddisk problem, if I recall correctly.

I don't use that app (never even heard of it ) but I'll dig through some old posts and see what I can find.

Again I know very little about tech, but it sounds like maybe the laser is trying to access a disk or something. Also, I have noticed, and this has been happening for a while now, that when I wake the machine from sleep, the drive sounds like it is trying to load a disk...that is more of a "whirring" or grinding type sound. Again, though, it doesn't seem to be effecting performance. <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

I as thinking the same thing, but I don't think so...is the HDD located right beside the optical drive on the TiBook? (Sorry I know so little about this stuff...I should put a disclaimer in my signature )

Glad to know it is not an isolated incident.
