Fonts Gone Missing

The majority of my fonts disappeared. Currently there are only about twelve fonts I can choose from. I checked the library folder and there are oodles more on there that I can't use in any program. Where do I have to put fonts to make them available? Can I import fonts from my OS 9 folder?
