Apple on Tuesday updated its iBooks application for iOS, adding access to its digital iBookstore to users from Japan.

Update: Apple on Tuesday issued a press release officially confirming that the iBookstore is now open for business in Japan. It was mentioned that the iBookstore is now available in 51 countries, while the iBooks app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch has been downloaded 130 million times worldwide.

?We?re excited to launch the iBookstore in Japan with a wide selection of Japanese publishers and authors,? said Apple?s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue. ?We think customers are going to love how engaging and interactive the books are to read, and how beautiful they look on iPad.?

That took freaking long enough, didn't it? I can't stand this multinational nonsense when it comes to stores. One iTunes Store, worldwide. Have these morons ever heard of the long tail? Many of them would octuple their sales.

When you have $130B in the bank don't you think you could roll out things faster than this? Maybe they hedge their bet in case it's a flop?

When licensing deals are dependent on third parties, all the money in the world can't expedite it.
