Upgrading to Jaguar ... dumb questions

I know I'm late doing this, but anyway...

I want to update my PB550 (DVD model) to Jaguar from 10.1.5 and I want to know whether I have to save my files, preferences, iTunes and iPhotos etc before I do it. If so, where can I save them since I don't have a CD burner?

I'd like to do this tonight - so prompt responses would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

PS - if this has been covered elsewhere - please point me in the right direction.

Well, I have always hear other people recommend a clean, hard-drive wiping, install, so if by any chance possible, you should try to move your files to somewhere else and wipe the HD. Do you not have another computer around, one equipped with ethernet? A PC or a Mac? (since you don't have ethernet).

If you don't, you could choose to do a archive install, which will write a completely new system folder for you, this way, you do get a fresh system (and I believe some settings are transferred for you too).

Or you could do the worst (but easiest choice) being an upgrade install.

Other than this however; are you aware that you are sitting on a timebomb? Do you not have any means of regularly backing up your important files? If not, you best hope that you never get data loss, which happens at some time or another to many, if not most computer users. It happened to me twice, and I think many here have their own tales of horror.

    Thanks der Kopf,

I just did an upgrade install and am now it seems I'm not going to go to bed... I'm checking out the address book, downloading Safari and iCal. It all feels quicker and solid somehow. (Maybe I'm just wishing it to be that way, though).

Anyway, thanks for your advice - I do realise that I'm on a timb bomb so I have backed-up my important files to the iDisk.

I'm not ready to shell out for a CD burner yet, since I figure the next computer I own will either have the combo or super drive... but for the time being I'll have to do with emailing my work account the odd file and relying on the iDisk. <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

Thanks for your advice and help though - I did appreciate it!

Archive Install works well... but I find, somehow, for a clean install to be the best option.

I get the "blinking desktop" after major crashes (luckily few and far between) and after every dot system upgrade. 10.2.1, 10.2.2 etc etc

Also, I have noticed that updating the system with the stand alone updaters are 'better'.

You could get a firewire drive instead. this would be usefull on a new system as well and would give you the piece of mind of knowing if all goes to crap your not completely screwed.
