FW hard drive formatting

I just got a 40 gig firewire/USB 2.0 hard drive, and I'm having a problem with my formatting options. It came in DOS format, which would have been fine, except I get errors every time I copy files to it, because of special characters. I tried reformatting to Mac OS, but I was unable to share with my PC friends. How can I copy these files onto a DOS formatted disk with out going through 5000 files and manually removing special characters? Are there any advantages to Mac OS format, or Unix file system format? Thanks!
