AT&T Family Plan contract/handset gymnastics

Might be OT for this forum (since it's not really a carrier support site) but I'll ask anyway...

Family Plan customer since 2008, FAN Discount via employer.

Still under unlimited (grand fathered)

3 lines

3 iPhone 4S still in contract

One of the handsets took a bath in a pool.

On 1 of my lines/handsets the ETF is 145.00 (6 1/2 mo. till contract end)

Question: What's my cheapest route to a new handset where I still end up with 3 lines/3 phones?

...and still keep unlimited data...of course

im willing to pay the 145.00 ETF...it's just the steps after that have me confused.

Go in to an ATT store and speak with someone ... they'll charge you the ETF, and then you can buy a new phone at contract price.

Of course, they'll give you a hard sell on buying "insurance" or whatever they call it, considering your circumstances. :)

There's no way to switch "plans" though without losing your unlimited data.  ...and they'll probably try to talk you into doing just that.

    Thanks for the reply :)

So, would this scenario work? :

Step 1) Pay the ETF, then upgrade at contract price

    <"upgrade" to a free iPhone 4s with a new 2yr contract>

Step 2) Swap the now off-contract phone with the damaged phone (SIM swap/number swap, whatever)

    ?

    Thanks in advance
