iLife suites for iOS, OS X updated for Apple's latest operating systems
Apple's iLife applications --?iPhoto, iMovie and Garage Band --?have all been redesigned and refreshed with new features for both iOS 7 and OS X 10.9 Mavericks, it was announced on Tuesday.
iLife for iOS and Mac are both free with the purchase of any new Mac or iOS device. They will be made available today.
In iPhoto, Photo Books are now available for iPad. iPhoto lays out the book, which can be uploaded to Apple, where the coffee table book is printed and mailed to the home.
iMovie has been redesigned for iOS 7 with a cleaner and simpler design. Users no longer need to create a project or edit, they can simply select one and tap share.
Apple has also boasted that iMovie has "desktop-class effects" on both iPhone and iPad.
iMovie on iMac also has a new design that makes browsing a library easier. It's also easier to speed up or slow down a video, taking advantage of the 120fps video capabilities of the new iPhone 5s.
iMovie theater also takes users' movies, trailers and shared clips, and puts them in a single place to see. Creating a movie on the iPhone also makes it available across all devices, including Apple TV.
Finally, Garage Band was also revamped with a new look for iOS 7. If users have a 64-bit device, they can now do up to 32 tracks of music on their iPhone or iPad.
"Your favorite album was probably created in 24 tracks," Apple's Eddy Cue said.
Garage Band was also updated on the Mac, which adds the ability to create a drummer track. The new feature allows users to increase the energy and complexity of an automated drum track, while also changing the kit or adding more drum fills.
The new drummer feature is powered by some of the best session musicians in the world, Apple said. Different sounds and styles can be tested by choosing different virtual drumming personalities. More drummers and instruments can be added through in-app purchases.

With iLife FREE with purchase of iOS...very few will want to buy anything but an iPad.
Very happy with the GarageBand update. 32 tracks? Nice.
So what’s the price if you don’t buy a new Mac? Same as the old price?
And since iLife is now App Store-based, does that then mean free updates forever from here on out, or does it mean the applications will be delisted and relisted as “separate”, necessitating a future repurchase?
iLife applications in the Mac App Store now read by year (’11). They are also available to me as “install” rather than the paid version.
My copy of iLife comes from pre-Mac App Store, and so does not show up under my account nor has been available for free… until today. Apparently I can now freely redownload ’11 versions from the Mac App Store. I still do not see the new ones (they’ll be paid for me).
I'm not seeing Garageband (OS X) in the Apps Store at all! I removed it from my drive ('11 version) in case that was preventing me seeing it but still nothing. Anyone seeing this new (almost Logic Pro X) version yet?
Edit: iMovie Version 10 just showed up for me! Whoot ... I got something for free yeah... :smokey:
Okay, turns out when I clean installed Mountain Lion last year, apparently my iLife (of course, preinstalled on my Mac Pro) had registered itself under my Mac App Store account after all.
So just now, I got the new iPhoto and iMovie as “Updates” instead of paid. GarageBand showed up as “Free” in the store, but is downloading separately from my existing GarageBand install. Hopefully that doesn’t screw with anything…
iWork, on the other hand, looks to be paid, despite also getting iWork preinstalled on my Mac Pro at purchase.
EDIT: Three seconds too late. So, what, it’s free for everyone? Except those of us who didn’t buy iWork via the Mac App Store, I guess, since they’re all paid for me despite getting it preinstalled at Mac purchase. Guess I have to go out and get an iTunes card…
I'm going to get a Mac Pro so i get a free iWork.
Okay, so, I have all three iLife applications, free of charge. Didn’t buy a new Mac (obviously). My new GarageBand did NOT replace the old. Apparently both are installed, same with iMovie. iPhoto replaced itself.
In the Mac App Store, both iMovie and iPhoto show up properly (new icons) in my Purchases. GarageBand does not, instead showing the old GarageBand. Oop, never mind, both GarageBands show up, old one with version number, new one without.
Also, Pages from iWork ’09 remains on my computer (in its proper iWork ’09 folder). New Pages has been installed (in Macintosh HD/Applications directly). I ran out of funds for Keynote and Numbers, but I’m sure they will do the same.
This is really strange. Guess I’ll delete the old versions now?

And GarageBand started sparkling (animated) when it downloaded. I… guess that’s better than the stupid little blue dot in iOS, but…
EDIT: Deleting my old GarageBand and then clicking its icon in Launchpad launched the new GarageBand. Both icons remain, both go to the new GarageBand.

I am on the GM with the latest update ( update to Recovery Volume as of yesterday). I am wondering if I would be better off starting over with a clean install.
Same exact process for me. I have two GarageBands still. The new Garage band keeps trying to download additional data and instruments, but all connections seem too busy at last attempt. Strange thing is I already have everything there is downloaded in Logic pro X and the previous Garage band surely?
BTW was collaboration also available for the new Garage Band via iCloud (and therefore a new version of Logic Pro X I would hope) mentioned? I f so i missed that. But of all the Apple apps that would truly shine with collaboration via iCloud, Apple's music creation apps are right up there. I currently collaborate with musicians in France and the UK using LPX and it isn't easy. If it isn't yet possible I hope Apple think about this soon! I realize file size is somewhat higher if audio involved but now they are doing video via iCloud it would seem trivial to do audio these days even if it meant using some equivalent of ProRes for audio. Midi of course would be so simple.
UPDATE: OMG I have just been given the entire new iWork Suite and Aperture update on my 2010 MBP! Is this because I am a dev or has everyone got this? This is not what I expected. Thank you Apple!
Just this morning I got Keynote and Numbers updates (with Aperture) for free. I had already purchased Pages yesterday.
I’m going to see if I can get a refund for that. Now… how would I go about doing that… I’d love just a live chat with someone.
Couldn't be happier about all of this. I'm going to lose a lot of sleep learning about all of these upgrades!
