Apple updates GarageBand for Mac with bug fixes, stability improvements

Apple on Wednesday released an update to GarageBand, bringing minor tweaks and performance enhancements to its casual music creation tool.

GarageBand for Mac version 10.0.1 brings the usual unspecified stability improvements and addresses a "number of minor issues" users have reported with the software.

Apple's latest GarageBand for OS X Mavericks launched on the same day as Mavericks in October alongside other revamped iLife apps, like iMovie and iPhoto.

The latest iteration of Apple's music creation software got a new look with design cues taken from the iOS app. An all-new sound library was also added with fresh samples, as well as improved virtual instruments.

In addition, users can select from one of 15 virtual session drummers that can adapt their beats based on a user's direction. Genres include rock, alternative, R&B and more.

GarageBand for Mac version 10.0.1 comes in at 749MB and can be downloaded for free from the Mac App Store or Software Update.

    Wish Apple had more accompaniment that could be purchased (beyond the drummers). I'd love to be able to purchase backup orchestral, bass or rhythm guitar "musicians" (and to clarify, I'm talking about computer generated accompaniment, not loops).

    You might want to look at products like the EZ line from Toontracks - they have drums and piano midi type stuff that you can then customize (or create your own). Their superior drummer is a fantastic product but costs a little more (but seems to be in sale right now). Native instruments also includes a lot of presets in their products but they tend to cost a little more as well. Also keep an eye on audio deluxe.com they have the best prices I can find. Don't work for any of these companies btw but do use their products or services.

    It would be a good direction to take and I wouldn't count it out. In the mean time, it's there already in a small way using software instruments with the arpeggiator button.

    Obviously very limited compared to the drummer but still a quick and dirty solution in some situations.

    I'm thinking something more along the lines of artificial intelligence (at a low level, obviously) studio-quality accompaniment. I'm not 100% sure how GarageBand creates the drum tracks, but it seems to be a very clever method that analyzes the music and then "renders" an appropriate solution? Apple migrated the drummers from Logic Pro and I'd like to see them take it even farther, with percussion options also.
