Help, Internet Connect/Modem Icon unresponsive, takes 5-10 tries to dial

Recently, my iMac/400 (built-in Modem) has developed a problem with connecting to the internet. Normally, I would click the modem icon and select 'connect.' The machine would immediately begin dialing.

Now when I select the 'connect,' nothing happens. So, I have started opening 'Internet Connect' when I want to get online. This doesn't solve anything, but I can atleast see something happening. When I click the connect button on IC (which is active) it becomes grayed out, but nothing else will change that I can see. It stays this way for a few seconds and then returns to its original state. I need to click it multiple times before it will begin dialing PPP. When it does work, it begins to dial as soon as I click the button.

What is going wrong? I there any way I can see more details about what is happening during this pause? I thought it was isolated to my user, but my GF complained that it is also doing it on hers.

This happens with my G4 Quicksilver 800 sometimes, especially when it wakes up from sleep. Open a couple folders before you connect, to wake the computer's processor up. Then try dialing.

I'll give that a try, but I haven't seen anything to indicate the the problem is associated w/sleep. <img src="confused.gif" border="0">
